高雄位在台湾西南隅，是海运、军事、工业和渔业等方面的重镇；境内有台湾最大的商港、军港与渔港，也拥有南台湾唯一的国际机场，同时亦是铁路、公路的转运点和起讫点。
现今的行政区划“高雄市”是一个直辖市，为2010年原高雄市及高雄县合并改制而成，共有38个行政区行政区，境内人口有277万，面积达2946平方公里，辖区自玉山山脉延伸至台湾西海岸，与台南市、嘉义县、南投县、花莲县、台东县和屏东县相邻。
