ZooBank是一个开放取用网站，由国际动物命名法委员会管理，作为动物命名的正式登记处所[3]。任何的分类作为（如发表新分类或物种名称，以及变更其名称）必须要在ZooBank登录，才能获得《国际动物命名法规》的“正式”承认。
对于登录至ZooBank的分类项目，会采用生命科学辨识码作为其通用唯一辨识码[4]。
ZooBank最初的资料原型来自于《生物名称索引》，而这些资料则是从Zoological Record（现由汤森路透持有）内的科学文献汇编而成。

ZooBank于2005年由国际动物命名法委员会执行秘书正式提案[5][6]，并于2006年8月10日正式上线并接受登录，当时收录了150万个物种[7][8]。
而ZooBank的第一笔生命科学辨识码则于2008年1月1日发配[4]，也就是《国际动物命名法规》正式实施日期1758年1月1日的250周年。深海光鳃鱼于2008年1月1日0时0分2秒（UTC）进入ZooBank系统，成为辨识码发行后的第一笔物种资料[9][10][11]。
