HD 49798是在星座船尾座的一对联星,与地球的距离约为521正负14秒差距(1,699正负46光年)。它的视星等为8.3,是已知最亮的O型次矮星之一[10]。
HD 49798于1964年被发现为罕见的缺氢O型次矮星,是当时所知最明亮的O型次矮星[11]。这颗星被确认为联星,但伴星无法在目视或光谱上侦测到[12]。
在HD 49798的附近发现的X射线源RX J0648.0-4418,是只有XMM-牛顿卫星太空望远镜能够辨识的X射线源。它是一颗质量约1.3太阳质量的白矮星,以13秒的轨道周期绕行HD 49798[13];这个旋转速度每年加速72.0±0.6 ns[6]。这是从13秒的X射线脉冲中侦测到的,该脉冲是恒星风吸积在致密天体上的结果[10]。有人提出白矮星被一个岩屑盘包围着。在此模型中,盘中的物质会透过磁场被引导到白矮星的极区,这解释了观测到的X射线脉冲[10]。该系统被认为很可能在数万年内爆发成为Ia型超新星[14][15]。
