奇异球菌属(学名:Deinococcus)是奇异球菌科的一属革兰氏阳性的球状菌。可能广泛分布于环境中。此属的模式种为耐辐射奇异球菌(Deinococcus radiodurans)。该属学名源自希腊语:δεινός (deinos)意思为“可怕的,奇怪的”以及κόκκος(kókkos)意思为“颗粒”[1]。这些细菌具有厚的细胞壁,使其呈现革兰氏阳性染色,但它们也包含第二层膜,因此在结构上更接近革兰氏阴性细菌。当它们的脱氧核糖核酸暴露于高剂量的伽马射线和紫外线辐射时,奇异球菌能够存活。其他细菌在辐射下会改变其结构,例如形成内生孢子,而奇异球菌则能够耐受辐射而不会改变其细胞形态,也不会退回到硬化结构中。它们还具有类胡萝卜素色素和脱黄素的存在,使其呈现粉红色。它们通常根据这两个标准进行分离。2020年8月,科学家报告称,根据在国际空间站进行的研究,来自地球的细菌,特别是奇异球菌,被发现可以在外太空存活三年。 这些发现支持了“胚种论”的观点,即生命存在于整个宇宙中,以各种方式分布,包括太空尘埃、流星体、小行星、彗星、行星或受污染的航天器。[2][3]
