室女座SS是明显呈现红色的米拉变星，它的变光范围从9.5等至7.4等[2]，周期为361天。它也被考虑是一颗半规则变星，因为在过去数十年内他的最大和最小亮度本身也是个变数[3]。它因为富含碳，所以光谱类型是C6.3e，与双子座T相似。室女座SS，与含碳的米拉变星一样，有一条变化很大的H-α发射谱现，并与整体的光度变化同步，这条Hα谱线在变亮时显得更为明显[2]。在近红外波段上的观测显示，它的半径是500倍太阳半径，表面温度介于2405-2485k[4]。
