奇異球菌屬(學名:Deinococcus)是奇異球菌科的一屬革蘭氏陽性的球狀菌。可能廣泛分佈於環境中。此屬的模式種為耐輻射奇異球菌(Deinococcus radiodurans)。該屬學名源自希臘語:δεινός (deinos)意思為「可怕的,奇怪的」以及κόκκος(kókkos)意思為「顆粒」[1]。這些細菌具有厚的細胞壁,使其呈現革蘭氏陽性染色,但它們也包含第二層膜,因此在結構上更接近革蘭氏陰性細菌。當它們的去氧核糖核酸暴露於高劑量的伽馬射線和紫外線輻射時,奇異球菌能夠存活。其他細菌在輻射下會改變其結構,例如形成內生孢子,而奇異球菌則能夠耐受輻射而不會改變其細胞形態,也不會退回到硬化結構中。它們還具有類胡蘿蔔素色素和脫黃素的存在,使其呈現粉紅色。它們通常根據這兩個標準進行分離。2020年8月,科學家報告稱,根據在國際太空站進行的研究,來自地球的細菌,特別是奇異球菌,被發現可以在外太空存活三年。 這些發現支持了「胚種論」的觀點,即生命存在於整個宇宙中,以各種方式分佈,包括太空塵埃、流星體、小行星、彗星、行星或受污染的航天器。[2][3]
