Plex是一套媒体播放器及媒体服务器软件，让用户整理在设备上的有声书、音乐、播客、图片和影片文件，以供流至移动设备、智能电视和电子媒体播放器上。Plex可用于Windows、Android、Linux、OS X和FreeBSD[2]。另外，Plex亦让用户透过该平台观看来自YouTube、Vimeo和TED等内容提供商的影片。Plex亦与Bitcasa、Box和Dropbox等云端服务兼容[3][4]。
用户可透过Plex前端媒体播放器“Plex Media Player”管理及播放在一台运行“Plex Media Server”的远程电脑上的多媒体文件。另外，用户可使用“Plex Online”服务以社群开发的插件收看Netflix、Hulu和CNN的影片。[5]
Plex的媒体播放器本来是基于Kodi（当时名为“XBMC”）的源码开发[6]，在2008年5月21日分支。直至2015年10月，Plex使用的软件才完全被专有软件取代[5][7][8][9]。Plex的服务器软件“Plex Media Server”是由专有软件组成，与由自由软件组成的Kodi不同。
