Commonwealth是英語術語，傳統意義上指為促進共同利益而成立的政治群體，但該詞並無與中文一對一的對應翻譯，但可理解為廣義的「聯邦」。歷史上與共和主義（Republicanism）同義，可被用來指單一的共和國，因此在這種意義下譯為國家。現今可指稱一群主權國家的聯合體，例如「Commonwealth of Nations」翻譯為英聯邦，「Commonwealth of Independent States」翻譯為獨立國家聯合體。美國有四個州的正式名稱為「Commonwealth」：肯塔基州、麻薩諸塞州、賓夕法尼亞州、弗吉尼亞州，此時可翻譯為「州」或「邦」。

字源

「Commonwealth」這個名詞在15世紀時在英國出現，意指公眾福祉、共同的益處或福利。它是一個複合字，最早被寫為「common-wealth」或「common weal」（這個寫法，後來演變為「public weal」）。這個名詞最早是被用來翻譯拉丁語：res publica，即「公眾事物」。

它的字根「wealth」，較古老的寫法為「weal」，是「well-being」（安樂、福利）的意思。17世紀時轉變為財富、收入之意。因此17世紀時，「commonwealth」出現了「公眾共有的財富」的意思，被認為是經由人民、共和國的共同財富，使國家擁有的力量。
