Cree Research是於1987年7月在北卡羅來納州的德罕成立。在其六位創辦人中，有五位（Neal Hunter、 Thomas Coleman、John Edmond、Eric Hunter、John Williams Palmour（英语：John Palmour）和Calvin Carter）是北卡罗来纳州立大学的校友^[2]。

1983年時，這些創辦人（其中一個是研究助理教授，其餘的是研究生）想要利用碳化矽的特性，讓半導體可以用在更高溫、更高能量的應用。他們也知道碳化矽可以當作發光二極管（LED）照明中的二極體，此光源是在1907年提出的。他們要在實驗室找到讓矽晶體長晶的方式，在1987年建立公司，生產半導體和照明中的碳化矽^[3]。

公司在1989年推出了第一個藍光LED，可以用在大型、全彩的畫面和看版上^[4]。

公司在1991年提出了第一個商用的碳化矽晶圓^[5]。

公司在1993年首次公开募股，成為上市公司^[6]。

Cree在2021年10月更名為Wolfspeed^[7]。
