Commonwealth是英语术语，传统意义上指为促进共同利益而成立的政治群体，但该词并无与中文一对一的对应翻译，但可理解为广义的“联邦”。历史上与共和主义（Republicanism）同义，可被用来指单一的共和国，因此在这种意义下译为国家。现今可指称一群主权国家的联合体，例如“Commonwealth of Nations”翻译为英联邦，“Commonwealth of Independent States”翻译为独立国家联合体。美国有四个州的正式名称为“Commonwealth”：肯塔基州、马萨诸塞州、宾夕法尼亚州、弗吉尼亚州，此时可翻译为“州”或“邦”。

字源

“Commonwealth”这个名词在15世纪时在英国出现，意指公众福祉、共同的益处或福利。它是一个复合字，最早被写为“common-wealth”或“common weal”（这个写法，后来演变为“public weal”）。这个名词最早是被用来翻译Template:Langx，即“公众事物”。

它的字根“wealth”，较古老的写法为“weal”，是“well-being”（安乐、福利）的意思。17世纪时转变为财富、收入之意。因此17世纪时，“commonwealth”出现了“公众共有的财富”的意思，被认为是经由人民、共和国的共同财富，使国家拥有的力量。
