刘昕在高中时期创建过网络社区，同时对社区经营和平台技术产生了兴趣。2006年3月他编写了基于PHP和MySQL的社区软件Project Babel，后在2010年重写并迁移至Google App Engine，又将该软件开源于[[GitHub]]。<ref name="ifanr" />

2015年2月27日下午，V2EX全站<ref group=注>这里强调「全站」，而非部分页面。是历史名词，[[HTTPS]]尚未普及时[[深度包检测]]可以检查HTTP的传输内容，从而实现选择性屏蔽。例：当时维基百科江泽民条目打不开，但是其他条目可以打开。</ref>[[HTTP协议]]被[[防火长城]]通过关键词屏蔽，但通过[[HTTPS]]协议仍然可以正常访问V2EX，这一屏蔽到后来其取得备案才解除<ref name="greatfire_block">{{cite web|url=https://zh.greatfire.org/v2ex.com|title=v2ex.com 在中国 67% 被封锁|publisher=GreatFire.org|accessdate=2015-02-27|archive-date=2022-03-02|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220302183557/https://zh.greatfire.org/v2ex.com}}</ref>。
