鱿鱼也是頭足綱中被食用數量最多的，全世界都有食用魷魚的記錄，但不一定有食用其它頭足綱的習俗，中國的東南沿海、歐洲、韓國、日本和東南亞國家都把魷魚視為重要的食物來源，魷魚的販賣和人類的經濟活動密切相關。

== 名稱混淆 ==
魷魚在中國宋代始見記述，《本草綱目》引宋代[[蘇頌]]《圖經本草》：“'''柔魚'''，與[[八爪魚]]相似，但無骨耳”。在中文[[文言文]]里面，也有以“'''句公'''”称呼牠的。

鱿鱼与墨鱼（墨鱼目）两者相加成为“乌贼”，而乌贼的正式名称是“十腕总目”。

在台湾，鱿鱼又被细分为“'''大捲'''”、“'''中捲'''”、“'''小捲'''”等等，但是这种分类方式在其它使用中文的地区并不常见，在其余地区直接用“鱿鱼”，甚至范围更大的“乌贼”来含糊代替。

鱿鱼在多個地區，例如：東亞、地中海等地區是料理的常見食材。在西方國家，例如：[[歐洲]]、[[北美]]、[[澳洲]]，炸魷魚圈是非常常見的菜色。另外地中海沿岸國家的[[意大利]]和[[西班牙]]，也有很多魷魚料理。

鱿鱼是中国沿海地区常菜。鱿鱼在晒干后俗称土鱿。

== 分類 ==
鱿鱼是[[十腕總目]]的成員，但在解剖上說與同總目的另外四個目分別較大。它可以再細分為[[開眼亞目]]和[[閉眼亞目]]兩大亞目，合共有29科300多個屬，是頭足綱最大的分支。
