水獺亞科動物分佈於全球各地。[[紅樹林]]的水獺生長在[[歐亞大陸]]，[[美洲獺屬]]的水獺則生長在[[美洲大陸]]，而[[海獺]]則常見於[[北太平洋]]的海岸。

== 特徵 ==
水獺身长70－75公分，尾巴細長；头扁耳小脚短，趾间有蹼；有二層非常短而密（密度達到1,000根/平方毫米）的細軟絨毛，以保持身體的乾燥和溫暖；背部深褐色有光泽，腹部颜色较淡。

所有的水獺都具有細長、流綫型的身體結構，身體優美靈活，四肢較短。大多數都具有鋒利的爪。

== 生活習性 ==
大多數水獺都以[[魚類]]為食，也吃[[蛙類]]、淡水[[蝦類]]、[[蟹类|蟹類]]和[[贝类]]，有时也会捕食[[水鳥|水鸟]]，據說有時也會吃[[檸檬]]。

現今[[歐亞水獺]]已於臺灣島上滅絕，但在中華民國福建省的[[金門]]上仍有其蹤跡。

2012年8月28日，日本[[環境省]]已宣布日本水獺滅絕。現代日本也有飼養水獺做為寵物的風潮，大多是由東南亞引入的[[亞洲小爪水獺|小爪水獺]]。

日本水獭又名川獺。而在民间传说中，有很多川獭幻化为人报恩的故事。在[[鸟山石燕]]的《[[画图百鬼夜行]]》里也有对川獭的描写。由于身形类似黄鼠狼，川獭也被认为是聪明有灵性的动物。与中国神话类似，川獭会化成女性，穿上和服，用伞蒙住脸。如果有年轻人向她打招呼的话，就会拿下伞，露出它原本的脸孔，趁着年轻人吃惊的间隙袭击并咬死他<ref>[http://www58.tok2.com/home/hermitage/monster_touyou/kawauso.htm 川獺（カワウソ）] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071009155353/http://www58.tok2.com/home/hermitage/monster_touyou/kawauso.htm |date=2007-10-09 }}</ref>。在[[水木茂]]的作品[[鬼太郎]]里也有登场。有说法是川獺是[[河童]]的变形。
