鱿鱼是[[十腕總目]]的成員，但在解剖上說與同總目的另外四個目分別較大。它可以再細分為[[開眼亞目]]和[[閉眼亞目]]兩大亞目，合共有29科300多個屬，是頭足綱最大的分支。
