已知最早的鮭魚為'''流木始鮭魚'''（''Eosalmo driftwoodensis''），生活在3400～5600万年前的[[始新世]]。該魚種的[[化石]]標本有助科學家研究不同種類的鮭魚如何從共同祖先中演化出來。該[[英屬哥倫比亞]]發現的標本顯示，太平洋鮭和大西洋鮭的[[趨異演化]]在4000萬年前尚未開始。化石證據以及[[線粒體DNA]]的研究皆推斷兩屬的趨異演化約在2000萬年前至1000萬年前發生。<ref>Montgomery, David.
