2016年9月7日，隨著蘋果公司推出了[[iPhone 7]]及iPhone 7 Plus，iPhone 6和6 Plus亦於當日停產，其入門級iPhone的地位被[[iPhone SE]]取代。由於iPhone SE擁有比中端的iPhone 6更強大的內部硬件（大部分與iPhone 6S相同），並早於2016年3月31日發布。當它與iPhone 6和6 Plus一起出售時，這造成了不尋常的情況，直到9月7日它以低端iPhone在市場推出。
